Concerts/Events

The Service League of Hickory will have its annual ANTIQUES FAIR from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hickory Metro Convention Center on Oct. 19-21. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Service League Thrift Shop. call 324-0206 for more information.

The Hickory Museum of Art and the Catawba Science Center will have a SENSATIONAL SATURDAY on Oct. 21 themed, “Oh, the Places You“ll Go!“ The event is free. Drop-in from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 324-8576 for more information.

The Patrick Beaver Memorial Library will have “Not So Scary Stories,“ FAMILY STORYTIME for smal children on Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. Wear a costume. The event is free. Call 304-0500 ext. 249 for more information.

Hickory Community Concert Association will bring AHN TRIO, a blend of sound presented by three young women, to Lenoir-Rhyne College“s P.E. Monroe Auditiorium at 3 p.m. on Oct. 22. Tickets are $20. For more information call 328-7023.

On Oct. 26, Catawba Science Center will have Endangered Animals, Science Cover to Cover at 10:15 a.m. Bring preschoolers out for a creative morning of stories, fingerplays, puppets, costumes and songs to help children develop an early interest in science and reading. Free with admission. Also on Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., CSC will have Bats in Your Belfrey. Learn more about bats through this special night program. Free with admission.

THEATER

The modern opera THE DEVIL COMES TO WITTENBERG, by Hickory Composer Martin Rice, is the legend of Faust who suffers the consequences of selling his soul to the Devil for fame. The opera will be performed on one night only, Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. in the auditorioum of the Administration Building at the Catawba Valley Community College on Hwy. 70. Admission is free. NEWTON “ The Green Room Community Theatre begins its season with the musical GYPSY. The show will run weekends Oct. 5 through Oct. 25. The box office is now open. Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors/students. Season tickets are $24 for adults and $18 for seniors/students. Call the box office at 464-6128 for more information.

CLASSES

Art classes for children and adults will be offered at the Hickory Musuem of Art. THE FIGURE AND STILL LIFE IN COLOR is an adult class on drawing and painting using a life model. Taught by Kate Worm, class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27. The cost is $75 for HMA members and $95 for non-members.

DRESS FOR MESS is being offered for pre-school aged children. They will listen to stories, play games and get messy wiht art supplies. The class is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25, Nov. 1, 8, 9, Dec. 6 and 13. Cost is $15 for members and $22 for non-members.

MIXED MEDIA, a class for first, second and third graders, allows students to experiment with different art techniques and materials. Calss will meat from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Oct. 23, 30 and Nov. 6. Cost is $18 for members and $23 for non members. For information or to register call Beth Calamia at 327-8576.

ASHEVILLE “ The Writers“ Workshop presents its 7th annual MEMOIRS CONTEST. All work must be unpublishted. Limit is 6,000 words per memoir. One may send up to six memoirs. Your name, address, phone and title of work should appear on cover sheet only. the entry fee is $15 ($12 for workshop members) per memoir. Make check or money order payable to The Writers“Workshop. Write a short fiction story of no more than 15 pages, double-space; or a poem of no more than two pages long. Put name, birth date, phone number and title of work on the cover sheet. OWINGS MILLS, MD “ The International Library of Poetry has announced this year“s INTERNATIONAL OPEN POETRY CONTEST. The deadline for the contest is Nov. 30. The contest is open to everyone and entry is free. OWINGS MILLS, MD “ The International Library of Photography announces the INTERNATIONAL OPEN AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST. The deadline for the contest is Oct. 28. The contest is open to everyone and entry is free. To enter, sent one photograph in only one of the following categories: People, Travel, Pets, Children, Sports, Nature, Action, Humor, Portraiture, or Other. The photo must be a color or black-and-white print, unmounted, 8“ x 10“ or smaller. The Hickory Museum of Art, located in the Arts and Science Center in downtown Hickory, has several exhibits on display. On display through Nov. 12 is WHAT“S NEW: RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE PERMANENT COLLECTION. This is in the Shuford Gallery. In the main gallery, CONRAD FELIXMULLER & THE ART SCENE IN DRESDEN: GRAPHIC WORKS FROM 1913-1933, will be on display through Dec. 31. Also at the HMA, are Art Attacks, casual Thursday evening get-togethers. Each program features a social hour, refreshments and a 30-minute gallery talk. The museum also offers “Third Thursday“ every third Thursday evening of each month. Each event features a different musical act. On Oct. 19, Moodswings, a jazz combo group, will perform a timeline of jazz standards. Also this year, the museum will have Free Fridays on the first Friday of each month when all visitors get free admission. Located in the Arts and Science Center, the museum gallery hours are Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and senior citizens. FULL CIRCLE ARTS, a local artist“s cooperative and gallery, will have a show, FULL CIRCLE ARTS OCTOBERFEST. This exhibit will beon displayin the Window Gallery through Oct. 29. Full Circle Arts is an artist“s cooperative of visual and performing artists and craftspeople created to encourage appreciation and education for all art forms. Memberships are available. LENOIR “ The MORNING SONG GALLERY will have an exhibit of “Living Places/Living Spaces“ with paintings and sculpture by Lin Barnhardt, Mark Potter and Kate Worm through Oct. 26. THE CATAWBA SCIENCE CENTER is a hands-on science museum that has three floors of exhibits designed to make learning fun for area children. Currently on display and back by popular demand is the SCIENCE COURTYARD. Climb a mountain, dig for fossils, experiment with sound travel and explore the tree house. The hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information call 322-8169. The Catawba Science Center is is the Arts and Science Center in downtown Hickory and is part of the SALT Block. HIDDENITE “ At the Lucas Mansion Gallery at the HIDDENITE CENTER, the October exhibit will feature three-dimensional clay and pottery by Nancy Lewis, a North Carolina artist. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery is open free of charge. Call 632-6966 for more information. NEWTON - The CATAWBA COUNTY MUSEUM OF HISTORY, 30 North College Ave., Newton, is housed in the county“s 1924 Courthouse. The museum has interactive tours and exhibits for visitors of all ages and historical records and is open to group tours. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The HICKORY LANDMARKS SOCIETY“S historic Propst House is open to the public every Thursday and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Docents guide visitors through the house and answer questions. Historic homes Maple Grove and the Propst house are available for tour by appointment and are available for meetings, weddings, receptions and gatherings. CATAWBA - MURRAY“S MILL HISTORIC SITE, at 1489 Murray“s Mill Road, Catawba, is two miles west of the town of Catawba off N.C. 10. The mill complex is among the last of its kind in western North Carolina. the site features the mill (including a 28-foot overshot waterwheel and original French burr stones), Wheat house Folk Art Gallery, Murray and Minges General Store and the John Murray house. The mill is open to tours Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are at 10 a.m. and 1, 2, and 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with tours at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. guided tours are $3 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. VALDESE - THE WALDENSIAN HERITAGE WINERY is open year-round on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors are welcome to join a conducted tour, followed by a free wine tasting, whenever the winery is open.
