Sheriff's office donates scales to N-C Schools
Items seized in drug operations will be used by science classes

NEWTON - The Catawba County Sheriff's Office presented 20 sets of scales seized in drug operations to Newton-Conover Schools Tuesday.

“According to the state constitution, when we seize things from criminal prosecution it's donated to the school systems,“ said Maj. Joe Momier of the sheriff's office.

With three school systems in the county, the systems take turns receiving confiscated items after court proceedings are completed, Momier said.

“Someone's misfortune has been our good fortune ... they'll be put to a positive use here,“ said Dr. Charles Hill, assistant principal at Newton-Conover High School.

The scales, valued at over $2,000, will be used by science classes at Newton-Conover High School, Hill said.
